Higher School Certificate or HSC is a credential given to high school students and is supervised by the Board of Studies in New South Wales, Australia. It is a pretty complicated terminology that marks a certain era in the life of Australian students, as this will decide if they can choose a career path they’ve always wanted or enter their dream college. Just think of it as the counterpart of SAT in the United States. HSC surely is a big thing, but if you’ve undergone proper HSC coaching, you shouldn’t fear or worry the least bit about HSC.
HSC subjects are covered in the last two years of secondary education. Your decision in picking up the courses can be affected by your strengths, the subjects related to your career path, and the scaling of the subject. If you are under HSC coaching, your tutor can very well assist you in choosing the subject areas, except for English which is mandatory. Once you’ve made the decision, you will be provided by a course syllabus per subject, with schedule of topics per week. You will be given organized notes, will be assigned homework and practical exams as necessary. In the course of two years, you should be able to complete a total of 12 units in year 11 and 10 units in year 12, two of which are English.
Sitting with thousands other students at the end of year 12 to answer the HSC final examinations can really be nerve wracking. A span of few months would not be enough to cover everything you’ll need to know about HSC. You have to maximize all the time you have in your years 11 and 12, or preferably earlier to avoid cramming. If you did well in two years time, you will have great chances of success in the final HSC exams.
